ABOUT US

Raasay Heritage Trust Urras Dualchas Ratharsair logo

Raasay Heritage Society came into being in 1988. We set up a museum in a very small room (approximately 12ftx 8ft) in the West Wing of Raasay House. We attracted hundreds of visitors every year and helped many trace their Raasay relatives. The room housed many important artefacts and paper material collected over the years. We were informed that Raasay House was being sold and so we had to vacate the room.

In 1994 we met Mr Robert Muir of Skye and Lochalsh Enterprise Company at Borodale House; he advised us that since societies and associations could not own property, we should set up a charitable trust so that we could own property and access more funding.

We bought the remnants of an early eighteen century meal mill and its environs as well as a large piece of ground between Drochaid Sheumais Sheonaidh at Mill Place and Henderson’s Bridge. We built an access road and carpark on our land.

Now we are trying to acquire funding to complete the interior of Muileann Àrais, Raasay’s heritage centre.
